Hip to Shoulder

Hip to Shoulder

This practice is not a very traditional Yin. If you love to be exposed to something different in your practice you will love this. If you enjoy learning things about yourself in movement and stillness, you will love this. We will make use of little bits and pieces of an Awareness Through Movement lesson called Hip to Shoulder as well as poses that illuminate this relationship particularly well. This is a practice that I use often with my students who come to me with contralateral hip/shoulder pain. I find that it makes some mental/spiritual connections that can be very profound and healing.

Bell Hand

This is a sublime practice that is equal parts restorative Yin and meditation. We will take some absolutely delicious poses as we meditate on, of all things, the hand. You won’t believe how fast this hour goes by, and how incredible you feel after.

Body Here-ness

Body Here-ness

Many of us develop an antaogonisim with our bodies. In our younger years it’s because we feel that we don’t have the most desirable features. As we age we feel betrayed by the body for getting older, and illness and pain almost always result in negative feelings about the body. In this practice we will move through some gentle yet powerful somatic informers to help us settle fully into supported poses. We will also make use of an sweet mantra throughout; “I am here for my body/my body is here for me”. You are going to feel amazing after this practice and I hope you emerge with a new sense of friendship with your incredible body.

The “Wrong” Way

The “Wrong” Way

We’ve got some pretty hard and fast rules in postural yoga. Sometimes they make a lot of sense, but sometimes they could use a bit of scrutiny. Take the breath for example, our protocols have a purpose, but could we shift our breathing to serve another, just as important purpose? This class will explore common postures and transitions but in a whole new way.

Something for Nothing

Something for Nothing

Often we have an intractible, parasitic tension that causes pain. This tension is the bodies’ way of protecting an area. Sometime, relieving the tension can relieve the pain. Most of the time a stretch won’t do it. Instead we will have to teach the tissues to let go. This is a class about learning to let go, with techniques for doing just that.

Liminal Creatures

Liminal Creatures

In practice we will explore the state of liminality; A transitional time that is characterized by a lack of status or role. This is a particularly challenging state of being as most of us are learning! Our lives, never terribly certain, are now marked with a new level of transition and uncertainty in this time of Corona Virus. We will use this idea to go really deep into our movement practice today. Very much emphasizing the transitional movements that we usually throw away and instead throw away the beginnings and the endings.

Your Shoulders: Moving Beyond Fear

Your Shoulders: Moving Beyond Fear

Poll any commited Yogi and you will discover that most of us have had an issue with our shoulder in the past. We tend to blame common poses like chaturanga dandasana or side plank. Or we malign our poor posture or habits. From a somatic perspective though, none of these deserve the blame. It’s time to develop a healthier relationship between our movement and our body maps or image.

Yin & Pranayama: A Universe Conspires
